The Churches of F X Velarde- Speaker Dominic Wilkinson

June 29 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The churches of F X Velarde are caskets of craft. Working with a selection of skilled tradesmen and artists including Herbert Tyson Smith and David John he had a simple and effective formula; a muscular brick box, a semi-detached campanile, angels for mullions, colourful ceilings, gold mosaic crosses, bas relief carved fonts and geometric gilt altar ware. Velarde’s attention to detail could be frustrating for contractors and clients alike with colour schemes only ever agreed once the space was complete and some designs drawn in sand on site. It is this insistence upon control of the finishing touches that helps to raise the quality of Velarde’s churches above many of his contemporaries and sometimes raise a smile. This talk will explore some of his better known buildings, inspired in the early years by European Expressionism and the Liturgical Movement, before developing his own idiosyncratic formula.

Dominic Wilkinson is an architect, principal lecturer in architecture at Liverpool John Moores University and co-author of the recent biography on F X Velarde for the Twentieth Century Society, published by Heritage England and Liverpool University Press. A native of the South West he moved to Liverpool as a student and never quite got around to leaving, making his home and career in city.
